Peacekeepers, a two-part drama inspired by the experiences of British soldiers involved in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia, will go into production through BBC Films and Single Drama in February for transmission later this year on BBC-1.
Peacekeepers, written by Leigh Jackson and produced by Nigel Stafford-Clark charts the experiences of a fictional British Army battalion stationed in Central Bosnia in the early 1990’s. The ensemble cast of British and Bosnian actors includes Ioan Gruffudd (Great Expectations, Hornblower), Damian Lewis, Cal Macaninch (The Woodlanders), Matthew MacFadyen (Wuthering Heights), Jodhi May (Last of the Mohicans, Aristocrats) Ifan Meredith (Mill on The Floss) and Tom Ward (Vanity Fair).
“This is a profoundly moving human drama about British soldiers witnessing a complex and devastating civil war,” said Jane Tranter. “Peter’s particular expertise and sensibilities bring a powerful honesty and compassion to the telling of this important drama.”
“Peacekeepers deals with a side of war that’s never been dealt with on film before. It is a major scale production reinforcing the BBC’s undiminished commitment to original and stimulating one-off drama,” said David Thompson, Head of BBC Films and Single Drama. Peacekeepers will be filmed on location in Bosnia, the Czech Republic and Britain from February 21 until the end of April. It is produced by the BBC in association with Indigo Productions, the company formed by Scott Meek and Nigel Stafford-Clark when they left Zenith last year. The Executive Producers are Jane Tranter, Senior Executive Producer, BBC-1 Films and Serials, and Gareth Neame (All The King’s Men), the Assistant Producer is Pippa Harris. The Director of Photography is Richard Greatrex (Shakespeare in Love).
