'Theatre is a precious, pretentious thing for precious, pretentious people'

A new play by US writer Bruce Norris is set to turn the Royal Court's gritty tradition of working-class protest on its head

Some way into Bruce Norris's new play, The Pain and the Itch, which opens at the Royal Court later this month, Carol, the mother of two argumentative adult sons, tries to break the tension by confessing a taste for the sort of gloomy Holocaust movie which makes her feel a 'better person' for having watched it. When I ask Norris if he wants the audience to emerge from his scabrous, painful and, yes, itchy drama feeling better about themselves, he howls with laughter. 'No! I want them to feel a worse person for having watched it.'

MI-5 (Spooks) to begin airing on BBC America

MI-5

BBC America will have a 2 hour premiere of MI-5 starring Matthew Macfadyen this Tuesday on June 5, 2007 at 8:00 pm ET. See the official website for further information.

Follow the adventures of 'Section B,' a crack team of spies in MI-5's counter-terrorism department led by Senior Case Officer Tom Quinn (Matthew Macfadyen, Pride and Prejudice). MI-5's officers deal with everything from terrorist plots and immigration rings to arms smuggling and drug trafficking. They must outwit the world's smartest criminal minds by using their powers of perception and deception.

But, the on-the-edge world of being a spy comes with a price. The very nature of their jobs dictates that they must never reveal their true identity, however, this deception extends to their private lives where they must deceive even those closest to them.

MI-5 also stars Keeley Hawes (Wives and Daughters) and David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland) as Junior Case Officers Zoe Reynolds and Danny Hunter, Jenny Agutter (The Parole Officer, Logan's Run) as Senior Case Officer Tessa Phillips and Peter Firth (Pearl Harbor) as Harry Pearce, Head of the Counter-Terrorism department.

Thanks to Karan for pointing this out to us.  IMDb poster, gareth-86, had this to say about Death at a funeral:

Saw this film at the Cannes Film Festival - there was just one screening, but the cinema was packed.

It was certainly a highlight for me after seeing so much rubbish - a good script, great cast and a fun film! God we need more like this.

I highly recommend it to one and all.

It was the only film I saw this year that received a round of applause.
