Known in the UK as an award winning, talented character actor of stage and screen, unafraid to tackle challenging and controversial roles; Matthew came to international prominence as Mr Darcy in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice. Matthew followed this iconic performance by playing a sex offender in Secret Life. He received a Best Actor award by the Royal Television Society and was nominated for a BAFTA, also as Best Actor for this controversial role. In 2008, Matthew continued his remarkable career with another RTS nominated role for Best Actor, as Arthur Clennam in Dickens' Little Dorrit.

2010 will be an exciting year for Matthew. He returned to the stage, starring alongside Kim Cattrall in Noel Coward's Private Lives. He plays the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham in Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, scheduled to be onscreen in May 2010. He is the lead Ken Follett's best seller turned into a mini-series, The Pillars of the Earth, which is expected to air in the latter half of 2010. He will be filming The Promised Land, where he plays a British police officer chasing after Colin Firth. Finally, Matthew revealed he will be in Channel 4's drama, Any Human Heart based on a novel by William Boyd.
